“Behaviour is fine but the room feels flat and cold”
The class behaves, the work gets done, and you leave every lesson feeling like you taught a room of polite strangers.
Why this happens
Settling a class takes a particular register: instructions, reminders, quiet corrections. Because it works, that register becomes the default, until almost everything said aloud in your room is about work or conduct. Students read this accurately. Keeping your head down becomes the safe move, so nobody risks a joke or a flash of real enthusiasm, and in a class of thirty a student can go weeks without one personal exchange with you. Nobody has done anything wrong here. The calm was built carefully, and the flatness arrived with it.
The pattern holds because it never looks like a problem. A flat room causes no incidents, and plenty of students find the anonymity restful. You have your own reason to leave it alone: the order was hard won, and warmth can feel like the first step towards losing it. The techniques below treat warmth as something you build as deliberately as you built the routines, in three ways: some create small moments of personal contact, so students are greeted and known by name; some change what your voice notices aloud, so praise and firmness both carry warmth; and some plan enjoyment and real responsibility into the lesson itself.
